How to change Thunderbird 6 default browser

Posted on 15 September 2011 by Paolo Bernardi

Lately I’ve been playing with Opera. Despite my love for Firefox I found that I really like it, so I’ve started using it as my main browser on a daily basis.

I don’t use an integrated desktop environment (right now my desktop is a mix of LXDE, among other things), so I don’t have a centralized graphical tool where I can set the default browser.

In particular, finding out how to set the default browser used by Thunderbird when I click on the http links in my emails was kinda tricky, but thanks to mozillaZine I did it. Here’s how:

  1. select Preferences from the **Edit **menu;
  2. go to the Advanced tab and push the Config Editor button;
  3. swear that you’ll be careful! 😉
  4. search for the following entries and set them to true by double-clicking them: network.protocol-handler.warn-external.http, network.protocol-handler.warn-external.https, network.protocol-handler.warn-external.ftp;
  5. that’s it! The next time you’ll click on an http link in an email you’ll see a popup window where you’ll be able to set your default browser.
